nuclear POWER.
Korean SMR-powered container ship design revealed
16 February 2025
South Korea's HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has unveiled a nuclear-powered container ship model utilising small modular reactor technology.
The design was revealed on 12 February at the New Nuclear for Maritime Houston Summit, held at the Asia Society Texas Center in Houston, USA.
Previously, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) obtained Approval in Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a 15,000 TEU-class container ship design model applying small modular reactor (SMR) technology.
HD KSOE - a subsidiary of HD Hyundai - says the newly unveiled design model features enhanced economic efficiency and safety by incorporating actual equipment and safety design concepts.
Unlike conventional ships, nuclear-powered vessels do not require engine exhaust systems or fuel tanks.
The company has optimised the space previously occupied by large engine room equipment to accommodate additional containers, enhancing economic efficiency.
It has also applied a marine radiation shielding system using a double-tank method with stainless steel and light water to ensure safety.
Furthermore, HD KSOE, in collaboration with global energy technology company Baker Hughes, has applied a supercritical carbon dioxide-based propulsion system, improving thermal efficiency by about 5% compared with existing steam-based propulsion systems.
HD KSOE said it plans to establish a marine nuclear demonstration facility at its Future Technology Test Centre in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, to verify safety designs.
"HD KSOE is strengthening cooperation not only with major classification societies but also with international regulatory bodies to establish international regulations necessary for the commercialisation of nuclear-powered vessels," said Park Sangmin, Head of HD KSOE's Green Energy Research Lab, during a session at the summit. "Starting with the land-based SMR reactor manufacturing project, we aim to develop a marine nuclear business model by 2030."

Progress in environmental permitting of Polish SMR projects
11 February 2025
Orlen Synthos Green Energy can begin environmental and siting research for its planned small modular reactor projects in Włocławek and Ostrołęka after Poland's General Director for Environmental Protection issued the scope of the environmental reports for the projects.
In April 2023, Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE) announced it had shortlisted seven locations in Poland for further geological surveys to host small modular reactor (SMR) plants based on
GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy's (GEH's) BWRX-300, for which it holds the exclusive right in Poland. The locations were: Ostrołęka, Włocławek, Stawy Monowskie, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Nowa Huta, Tarnobrzeg Special Economic Zone and Warsaw.
OSGE submitted applications later that month to the Ministry of Climate and Environment for decisions-in-principle on the construction of power plants at six locations, omitting Warsaw from the list. The ministry issued decisions-in-principle for the six plants in December 2023. The decision-in-principle is the first decision in the process of administrative permits for investments in nuclear power facilities in Poland that an investor may apply for. Obtaining it entitles OSGE to apply for a number of further administrative arrangements, such as a siting decision or construction licence.
In accordance with the precautionary principle adopted in the European Union countries, recommendations on the application of the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment - commonly known as the Espoo Convention - in the transboundary context in relation to nuclear energy-related activities, transboundary proceedings were conducted.
The relevant case documentation was transferred to Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus. OSGE said Ukraine did not express interest in any of the proceedings, while the Lithuanian side applied for participation in the transboundary proceedings only in the case of Ostrołęka.

The World Nuclear Industry Status Report is a yearly report on the nuclear power industry.
It is produced by Mycle Schneider, an
anti-nuclear activist and a founding member of WISE-Paris, which he directed from 1983 to 2003.

Volgens

Sure, Dizzy. Sure. Not.

13 February 2025
Welding has been completed of the upper half of the VVER-1200 reactor vessel for El Dabaa nuclear power plant's second unit, with Rosatom saying that new materials and welding technologies can help increase the service life of reactors to 100 years.
The welding, at the Atommash production site in Russia, lasted for 20 days.
About 3.5 tonnes of wire and 4.5 tonnes of flux were used for two ring welds and anti-corrosion surfacing was carried out to provide additional strength.
Viktor Orlov, director general of Central Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering Technology (TsNIITMASH), said: "The reactor vessel is a key element of any nuclear power plant equipment, the reliability of which determines the service life of the plant itself.
Therefore, relying on the long-term experience of leading domestic schools and research by modern scientists, we are continuously improving metallurgical and welding-surfacing technologies used in the manufacture of reactor parts.
As a result, the service life of reactors has already been increased from 30-40 years for first-generation reactors to 60-80 years for generation 3+ reactors.
Now we see that this is not the limit - new materials will ensure a service life of NPPs of up to 100 years in the near future."
According to Rosatom "innovative structural materials, materials and welding technologies with increased radiation resistance and a reduced number of welds, which are the 'weak' point of any design", will help increase the service life to 100 years, with the works carried out as part of a national programme to develop "equipment, technologies and scientific research in the field of using nuclear energy".

Thorizon volledig wil gaan verbruiken in hun nieuwe kernreactor.
