De gebruikers van Apple Macintosh computers konden zich jarenlang wanen in de luxe positie dat virussen geen vat kregen op het besturingssysteem. Die tijd is over. Een Trojaans paard genaamd MP3Concept of MP3Virus.gen teistert de Mac OS X--gebruikers, zo meldt internettijdschrift Wired.

Waarschijnlijk gaat het om een test om te zien wat de mogelijkheden zijn. De stijgende populariteit van de Mac lijkt de virusmakers wakker geschud te hebben. Maar ook Apple’s toenemende invloed op digitale muziek kan een oorzaak zijn. De Trojan Horse lijkt aanvankelijk een gewoon mp3-bestand en kan ook gewoon in Apple’s muzieksoftware i-Tunes worden afgespeeld. De kwaadaardige code komt tot leven wanneer het bestand in de Finder (de verkenner of het bureaublad) wordt aangeklikt. Ook dan komt overigens i-Tunes in actie en speelt het nummer op normale wijze af.
Het virus kan bestanden van de harde schijf wissen, de controle over de machine overnemen en zichzelf vermenigvuldigen en verspreiden via bijvoorbeeld e-mail. Verschillende Mac-gebruikers in Europa en de Verenigde Staten hebben de besmetting gerapporteerd.

Two days ago, a company called Intego claimed to have isolated the first trojan to target Mac OS X. False alarm.
On Friday, Mac programmers and security experts accused the company of exaggerating the threat to sell its security software.
"They gave the impression that this is a threat, but it isn't," said Dave Schroeder, a systems engineer with the University of Wisconsin. "It is a benign proof of concept that was posted to a newsgroup. It isn't in the wild, and can't be spread in the wild. It's a non-issue."
"They are spreading FUD to sell their software," said Ryan Kaldari, a programmer from Nashville, Tennessee, referring to the shorthand for fear, uncertainty and doubt.
The root of the fuss seems to be this "proof of concept" program, which shows how a CFM application can be disguised using the three-letter extension of another file type (e.g. MP3).
Symantec says:
MP3Concept is a proof-of-concept Trojan targetted at the Mac OS X platform, that is currently not seen “in the wild”. It is not spreading or infecting Mac users. The proof-of-concept program does not contain any malicious payload such as viral code, ablity to email itself or perform destructive functions such as deleting files. It only contains code to display a message box and mp3 audio data of a man laughing.

Het virus, onder de naam MP3Concept of MP3Virus.gen doet niets meer als toegang zoeken tot je files, wat bij Intego doet vermoeden dat het om een testvirus gaat. Maar het bedrijf waarschuwt er meteen bij dat het virus gemakkelijk aangepast kan worden. Er zijn ondertussen updates voor de OS X virusscanner.
Het is het eerste originele Apple virus. Tot hiertoe waren Mac-gebruikers relatief veilig voor virussen. Daar zou wel eens snel verandering in kunnen komen. Vooral door de toenemende populariteit van iTunes, Apple’s muziekdownloaddienst, krijgen virussen vrij spel.
Ik zou toch wel eens nadenken over een anti-virus voor je Apple als ik dit zo lees...
