Belgium
(24/06/2003) Digital Radio launched in Belgium in September 1997 with a multiplex then operated by the Flemish public broadcaster VRT. Today, VRT has a multiplex covering 98% of the Flemish Community (expected to rise to 100% in 2004) and the French public broadcaster, RTBF, has a multiplex covering 98% of the French Community.
VRT carries eight audio stations and RTBF carries five audio stations, with most being simulcasts of existing analogue stations, among them is BRF in German. VRT offers two channels unique to DAB Digital Radio, DABklassiek playing classical music and 927Live, a sports programme. The RTBF multiplex retains several slots for commercial radio, but these have not yet been allocated. Data services are expected to be trialled over the coming year.
