across four countries, Epitiro has determined
that download speeds drop by an average of
30% over Wi-Fi, largely due to environmental

affected via Wi-Fi connectivity.
Though speeds drop over Wi-Fi connections, the

was also investigated to understand the
relationship between speeds and potential user
satisfaction with common applications.
As speeds are slower, subscnbers will notice a
difference inthetime ittakes to download a
large file. However, the data suggests that
popular activities such as emailing and web
surfing are not likely to be noticeably slower for
consumers when Good to Excellent signal
strength is achieved. Video-on-demand, Vol P
and on-line game play may be impacted due to
h igher latency and packet loss over the Wi-Fi
connection.
With sales of wireless devices (laptops,
netbooks, tablets, smartphones) now
outstrippingdesktop computers it is dear that
wireless (Wi-Fi) connectivity is important to
consumers. It also implies that con sumers have
practical expenence of the limitationswithWi-Fi
and accept these forthe benefit of mobility.
Consequently Epitiro recommends that ISPs and
Regulators could benefit from measuring
subscnber Quality of Experience in addition to
traditional quality of service network analysis.
