Quote van Mobile Vikings:
Some of you have been impatiently waiting to test our 3G service. Starting 25/03/2010 (with 95% certainty, you never know), all Mobile Vikings will be able to use the 3G network. This blog post explains how the introduction will happen.
You do not need to do anything to switch to 3G. Most mobile phones will detect the 3G signal where it is available. If your phone is on “automatic”, it will choose 3G where appropriate and switch to EDGE when needed. In some locations there is a 3G signal, but your phone does not switch to it. It is not advised to configure your phone to manually force a 3G connection in these locations. The connection will be made, but no data will be transported over the connection. Your phone will indicate it is connected, but your web browser will not work. We are writing this explanation in the hope to avoid unnecessary helpdesk calls. If you see people complaining online about the above situation, you can always reply with a link back to this blog post.
If you want to test the connection speed, you will notice it will not exceed 500 Kbps. This is not a limitation of the technology. During the first phase, all connections are restricted to 500Kbps to gradually increase the load on the network. We don’t know yet when this capping will be removed.
As most of you will know, 3G coverage is not available everywhere. We are using the 3G network of KPN Belgium (Base), which is under continuous expansion. Where there is no 3G coverage yet, you can fall back on the reliable EDGE network. For more information regarding network coverage and expansion we refer to the communication of Base.
We hope this information will help us make a nice transition to 3G. We are convinced that the 3G network of Base will soon be up to par. The 2G network is already better than the network of Mobistar and Proximus, as reported by this independent report on network quality: http://mobilevikings.com/media/download ... 09_sam.pdf
